If you’re brand new to the world of web design and web development, it makes sense to learn how to code using free online resources. That way, you can discover what you like – and more importantly – before committing to more in-depth courses (like one of the Skillcrush blueprints!). The list is based on an earlier article I wrote for Learn To Code with Me, but it has been updated and expanded* to include more resources. It is a compilation of courses, written tutorials, blogs, YouTube channels, e-books, online communities – even in-person workshops.

The great thing about putting your work online is that there are lots of ways to do it. And lots of ways to do it for free. I had the lucky start as a web designer where I started learning how to code HTML, CSS and JavaScript and producing my sites. These were some important tools of the trade. Once I knew enough to put real code online, I edited that Tumblr theme until I came up with a design that was mine. After that, I worked on my craft and made my first website. It has since been edited enough that it now lives on darianrosebrook.com and went through several revisions as I honoured my craft.

I remember that in my early stages of learning web development, I felt confused several times about the differences between design and development. What are the roles of a web designer? What does working with web design mean? Are web design and web development the same thing? Are they interchangeable terms with the same meaning that you don’t have to be afraid of.

Become an expert. There are thousands of useful articles and courses spread all over the web. Many of them are free or cost very little. You can easily read one useful article a day or follow a course, such as Google’s Responsive Web Design, over the weekend. The better you get, the more successful you will be. Spend time with developers. Get to know their views on the projects you’re working on. For example, a developer will always be looking for a simple solution. There are many ways to achieve complex interactions with minimal use of CSS and Javascript.

In 2006, Xara invested in opening a large percentage of the source code of Xara Xtreme, a vector graphics package, as a way to invite user innovation. However, Xara did not open a small, commercially critical part of the source code.

Ideal for any time you need to create a quick collage of images, there are now 16:9 templates that are ideal for adding to video projects. I just dragged five images in here, and without shrinking them, Xara has automatically made them fit as closely as possible to the original proportions. A trick to keep in mind: if you want a large collage, drag and drop the template to a larger size before filling it with photos. The photos are still bitmap images, so you can’t stretch them like most Xara vector elements.

Adobe Muse

For the program, I decided to look at a few that are Adobe Muse. Adobe Muse is a great website for designing and creating anything you would ever want on your site. It also has so many other features that I don’t even know how to use them because the muse is an absolute must for creating your website!

Like themes, Adobe Muse allows users to find large widgets that add extraordinary functionality to their website with ease. Amaya uses XPointer to indicate where annotation should be added to a document. XPointers are based on the structure of the document. To build an XPointer for a selection, for example, Amaya starts from the first point of the selection and runs backwards through the structure of the document, until it finds the core of the document. If an element has an id attribute, Amaya stops building the XPointer and considers the element with the id attribute as the beginning of that XPointer.
